St Lawrence

The St. Lawrence Lodge of Mark Master Masons marked their 75th Anniversary. The Provincial Grand Master and a full deputation attended this special occasion.

The St Lawrence Lodge of Mark Master Masons was Consecrated on 28th February 1948. Their mother Lodge is the Wouldhave Tyne Dock Lodge. St Lawrence Lodge was originally located in South Shields, their first home being the Hedworth Masonic Hall. When this hall closed, they moved to the Masonic Hall at Ingham Street in South Shields.

Unfortunately, with declining membership and another Mark Lodge being based at the same hall, there were serious thoughts about closing the Lodge. They began discussions about their fate with the Provincial Executive. However, during these discussions an alternative was suggested which may allow the continuance of the Lodge. This option was to move to another home where there was no Mark Lodge.

The Lodge considered several options before deciding on Billingham as a possible new home. W Bro George Clark was instrumental in negotiating the relocation. In November 2017 St Lawrence Lodge of MMM commenced activities in their new Billingham home. It was hoped the new location would breathe new life into the Lodge and encourage Billingham Masons to join the Mark.

This so far has proved to be the right decision, with the Lodge achieving its 75th anniversary and also attracting new members.

To help celebrate their anniversary, they advanced a new Mark Mason, Bro Liam Enisz. The ceremony was expertly performed by the Worshipful Master Nicholas Howell and Ken Robson, stand in Senior Deacon from Wouldhave Tyne Dock Lodge. To add to the enjoyment, they welcomed joining member Nigel Fallow and there were indications of more new members to come.

The evening was rounded off with a splendid meal at the festive board. The Provincial Grand Master David Hanson, congratulated the Lodge on their achievement but also for taking on the challenge and moving to a new home and making it work. It was a satisfying way to celebrate 75 years of the Lodge. But, not only that, to also celebrate the future with some positive signs.
